REHABILITATION AFTER FLOOD
-
Be aware of areas where floodwaters have receded. Return to your home only after authorities declare it is safe to do so.
-
Assess your home for damages and move into the house only after it has been assessed as safe.
-
If required, carry out necessary repairs to the house before moving in.
-
Throw away carpets, rugs etc which have been damaged by the flood.
-
Drive cautiously over roads which may have weakened and could collapse under the weight of a vehicle/tractor/bullock cart.
-
Clean and disinfect everything that got wet. Mud left from floodwater can contain sewage and chemicals.
-
Do not allow stagnant water to remain in puddles for long time as it will allow breeding of insects and mosquitoes.
-
Clean your hand pumps and wells with bleaching powder before using them again. Continue to drink only boiled water or water treated with chlorine.
-
Keep yourself safe against diseases and eat only cooked food after washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
-
Dead cattle and livestock must be buried away from human settlements immediately in deep pits which shall be disinfected with bleaching powder after covering them with earth.
-
Restore electricity in your houses only after ensuring it is safe to do so and nothing in contact with electrical system is wet.
