
DEALING WITH THE DECEASED

Persons involved in the management of drinking water, waste water or sewage

Burial should be preferred to cremation in case off mass casualties.

Bodies should not be disposed-off in mass graves.

Families should have the opportunity to conduct culturally appropriate funerals and burials.

Graveyards should be located at least 30m away from sources of water used for drinking.

Bottom of any grave must be at least 1.5m above the water table with a 0.7 m unsaturated zone.

Surface water from graveyards must not enter inhabited areas.

Precautions must be exercised for disposal of blood and body fluids.

Workers dealing with the deceased should use safety gloves without re-use and must ensure the use of body bags and practice handwashing after handling bodies.

Workers dealing with the deceased should be vaccinated against hepatitis B.
