DEALING WITH THE DECEASED

 

  • Persons involved in the management of drinking water, waste water or sewage

  • Burial should be preferred to cremation in case off mass casualties.

  • Bodies should not be disposed-off in mass graves.

  • Families should have the opportunity to conduct culturally appropriate funerals and burials.

  • Graveyards should be located at least 30m away from sources of water used for drinking.

  • Bottom of any grave must be at least 1.5m above the water table with a 0.7 m unsaturated zone.

  • Surface water from graveyards must not enter inhabited areas.

  • Precautions must be exercised for disposal of blood and body fluids.

  • Workers dealing with the deceased should use safety gloves without re-use and must ensure the use of body bags and practice handwashing after handling bodies.

  • Workers dealing with the deceased should be vaccinated against hepatitis B.
