SURVIVAL JUST AFTER EARTHQUAKE

FIRST AID

On a bleeding wound put direct pressure using clean gauze or cloth, if available and tie it tightly, otherwise keep it pressed

If a person is not breathing, administer mouth to mouth breathing while keeping his nose pinched.

Do not move seriously injured persons unless they are in immediate danger of further injury.
-
Cover injured persons with blankets or additional clothing to keep them warm.

TEMPORARY SHELTER
Where to locate
-
Open grounds away from structures and trees.
-
Away from slopes where boulders may roll down in case of hilly areas
-
Stay away from rivers.
Guidelines
-
Use Lightweight materials for walls and roof.
-
Construct moat at least 1ft deep for water drainage all around
-
Avoid making kitchen inside unless with ventilation
-
Store combustible materials away from fire.

Make tent or umbrella type structure using stretched sheet to prevent against rain (Roof can be made of even normal cloth which is not waterproof just be making it like an umbrella in a totally stretched form)

Ballies may be used for support. Straws, twigs etc can be used against outer side of walls for rain and heat protection.

Guard livestock from wild and stray animals.
-
In extreme cases, shelter can be shared with livestock.

SURVIVAL SKILLS
Things to do during an earthquake inside the building
-
If you know of a safe location (within a 30 second walking distance), walk calmly towards it. Do not run.

Otherwise stay indoors and do the following
-
Drop to the ground, take cover by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture which is located near a wall.

If there is no table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.

Stay away from glass windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, (such as lighting fixtures or furniture).

Do not use lifts
-
When shaking stops, walk to a safe location looking out for any falling objects.

Be aware that the electricity may go out.

Things to do during an earthquake outside the building
-
Stop and do not move from where you are.
-
Stay away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and utility wires.
-
If you are in open space, stay there until the shaking stops.
-
If you are in a moving vehicle, stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle.

Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires.
-
Get away from and avoid roads, bridges, ramps or staircases while shaking is going on.
Things to do when trapped under debris
-
Do not light a match.
-
Do not move about or kick up dust.
-
Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.
-
Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout only as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust.
Things to do after an earthquake
-
Keep calm, switch on the radio/TV and obey any instructions you hear on it.
-
Keep away from beaches and low banks of rivers.
-
Expect aftershocks.
-
Turn off the water, gas and electricity.
-
Do not smoke and do not light matches or use a cigarette lighter. Do not turn on switches. There may be gas leaks or short-circuits. Use a torch.

If there is a fire, try to put it out. If you cannot, call the fire brigade and leave the place immediately.

If people are seriously injured, do not move them unless they are in danger.
-
Immediately clean up any inflammable products that may have spilled (alcohol, paint, etc).

If you know that people have been buried, tell the rescue teams. Do not rush and do not worsen the situation of injured persons or your own situation.
-
Avoid places where there are loose electric wires and do not touch any metal object in contact with them.
-
Do not re-enter badly damaged buildings and do not go near damaged structures.
